Where the scale collects first
Inside the water heater, as a layer on the bottom of the tank that insulates the burner from the water. The heater runs longer for the same hot water, the steel above the layer overheats, and the tank fails years early.
In shower heads and faucet aerators, where it shows up as uneven spray and lower flow.
Inside faucet and shower valve cartridges, where grit chews the seals and starts the drip that no amount of tightening fixes.
What is worth doing about it
Flushing a few gallons off the bottom of the water heater once a year removes loose sediment before it bakes on. It is the single cheapest habit that extends heater life.
Aerators and shower heads unscrew and soak clean in white vinegar in about twenty minutes.
A softener or a scale-reduction system pays for itself mainly through heater and fixture life, not through better showers, so weigh it against how long you plan to stay in the house.
What is just cosmetic
White spotting on glass and chrome is calcium on the surface, not damage. It wipes off and it tells you nothing about the condition of your pipes.
Cloudy water straight from the tap that clears from the bottom up is dissolved air, not minerals or contamination.
